Antibiotics

Antibiotics for acne

Antibiotics are often used in the treatment of acne. A number of antibiotics may be prescribed for acne, most commonly doxycycline, minocycline and erythromycin.

How do they work?

Antibiotics improve acne by two main mechanisms:

1) Reduction of P. acne bacteria

2) Reduced inflammation

Where do you get them?

Antibiotics are available from pharmacies with a valid prescription.

Types of antibiotics.

  • Doxycycline

  • Minocycline

  • Erythromycin

Adverse reactions and FAQ

  • Doxycycline is generally well tolerated. Possible adverse reactions may include:

    • Gastrointestinal upset

    • Photosensitivity - 3% of patients become very sensitive to sunlight, and burn severely with minimal sun exposure

    • Erosive oesophagitis - doxycycline can cause severe irritation of the oesophagus if it lodges there, without making its way all the way to the stomach. Swallow doxycycline with a full glass of water, to ensure it makes its way to your stomach, and don’t lie down for at least thirty minutes after taking the medication

    • Oral or vaginal thrush

    • Rare but serious adverse reactions include pancreatitis, intracranial hypertension (increased pressure in the brain) and liver toxicity.

  • Doxycycline is unsafe in pregnancy and in children - it can cause permanent damage to teeth of unborn or young children.

As such, doxycycline should not be taken in pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
